Addictions and cravings

Don’t skip this section, you may think because you don’t take recreational drugs or don’t smoke cigarettes or drink too much that addiction doesn’t apply to you. However, I am talking about the everyday substances you find on the supermarket shelves!

Do addictions and cravings keep sabotaging your good intentions? Sabotage your good intentions of losing weight, getting healthier, and changing your habits of a life time, habits that speed up your aging and degeneration process. Being addicted or having powerful cravings is a real problem for many people. You are probably one of a vast number of people who are hooked. It’s a viscous circle. You know the situation, you are not really hungry and yet you eat far too much and in fact sometimes eat until you feel nauseous or so full it’s uncomfortable. Why is that?

Here are some of the typical foods and drinks you might be addicted to?

Chocolate - some people think the chocolate they eat is good for them, that it is healthy! There is some chocolate on the market that could be classed as healthy, however the chocolate most people eat certainly isn’t good for them. The average chocolate on the shelves is going to speed up aging and deterioration. 100% cocoa is bursting with anti-oxidants and if you are buying 70 to 80% cocoa rich chocolate than you are certainly eating a healthy version. Most people eat the other stuff that is only about 27% cocoa, the other 73% is sugar and fat. NOT healthy and very addictive.

White flour – covers a vast amount of different foods, from bread, cookies, crackers, pastry and so on. This substance is destructive and highly addictive for some people.

Sugar – is found in so many foods theses days. A couple of hundred years ago sugar was worth its weight in silver and was kept under lock and key, because it was then recognized for how addictive it was. For many decades sugar has been subsidized making it very cheap, hence why it is found in such abundance. This is another highly addictive and totally destructive substance that will encourage aging and degeneration.

HFCS – high fructose corn syrup (not to be confused with fructose from fresh fruit, there is a world of difference). This is even cheaper than sugar and found in even more products – highly addictive.

Caffeine – found in tea, coffee, and more soft drinks (sodas) than you may realize, even in soft drinks where you wouldn’t expect to find caffeine, like in orange flavoured soft drinks. Caffeine keeps us wanting more.

Artificial Sweeteners – much research has made it clear that products with artificial sweeteners will encourage a craving for sweet and fatty foods, the very foods that will act like a catalyst to for more. Besides, these sweeteners are chemical – stop poisoning yourself. Do not be fooled with the advertising hype about these substances.

Processed, highly refined fats – these are also found on our supermarket shelves in abundance of products. Found in so many products, it takes studying the labels to uncover them.

Alcohol, we already know that alcohol can be addictive. The latest figures from the health department show we are drinking too much, its on the increase.

Dairy products – some people have a problem with cheese and find it compulsive .

After 20 year almost at the clinic we have seen many people with quite serious chronic conditions and/or weight problems who tell me they don’t have any addictions. Not realizing until they are asked – for instance give up cheese or sugar panic sets in – if I ask them to give up apples or pears they don’t bat and eye lid (this an example I don’t ask people to give up pears).

However, after the initial panic has subsided – most people understand the situation.

The first step is to write down in a daily journal everything you eat and drink.

Most people are surprised when they see it all written down in black and white. It’s the first time some people actually fully appreciate what they are doing, what they are really eating and drinking in the course of a week. For most people have really little idea what they eat and how much they eat, until they see it all written down.

Think about it, you know deep down that some foods are so more-ish – open up a packet of chocolate cookies, see how soon it is before you want another one and then just one more, before you have eaten than you intended and you weren’t even hungry! Most people wouldn’t consider gorging on foods like apples somehow they just don’t have the same appeal or fill the same need. Back to our chocolate cookies, for some people just knowing there is a open packet of cookies drives them crazy, needing to finish the packet, hungry or not. Then comes the feeling of being bloated, sleepy and guilt sets in.

All those good intentions sabotaged again. Or maybe you are one of many people who just need for something fatty and starchy with sugar or salty at around 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Around this time consciously or subconsciously your concentration begins to fail, maybe you start getting a headache, irritable or maybe just plain tired (without being totally aware). You may think this is just stress. You convince yourself you need something to give you energy to get you through the rest of the day. Some people are like this around 11 in the morning too.

By the things you choose to consume you are messing around with your blood sugar levels. Once you are on this trend-mill its takes a really concerted effort to get off. These fluctuating blood sugar levels are certainly sabotaging your plans for a healthy long slim life. The body has a built-in safety mechanism that protects us to a degree from ourselves, but there is only so much it can do before it becomes compromised.

Things you can do straight away -

change to the 70 to 80% cocoa rich chocolate

change to whole-wheat only, cutting down the amount of wheat products you eat

remove sugar from your diet – eat fresh, frozen or dried fruit instead

change your artificial sweeteners for a more natural one called stevia easy to find in most supermarkets

change from drinking coffee to green tea (contains naturally less caffeine) research shows green tea helps with weight-loss

never drink alcohol on an empty stomach – no pre-dinner drinks, drink wine with a meal, if you like having a drink

Keep that journal and record your reactions, over the years we have seen many people be quite surprised when they realize their reaction and their relationship to certain foods – you may think you don’t have a problem but your journal might reveal a different story.
When it comes to eating right and exercising, there is no “I’ll start tomorrow.” Tomorrow is disease.
Fatty acids are excellent for painful inflammatory conditions. GLA (gamma-linolenic acid), maybe you know it in the form of evening primrose oil, other great sources of GLA comes from black current oil, hemp oil and borage oil. GLA is also used for all sorts of menstrual/hormonal problems and PMS symptoms. People taking this supplement found they had increased mobility and a reduction of stiffness in their joints.

Their sleep patterns improved which will make anyone feel better. Other research has found that GLA reduced joint swelling and tenderness by approximately 40% more than for the sufferers taking a placebo supplement. GLA has powerful anti-inflammatory properties as well as helping to lubricate the body plus providing very much needed essential fatty acids that most people are short of.

Couple this with a multi-faceted approach of changing to a healthy anti-inflammatory diet and other measures outlined in this blog; you will have some affective tools for combating your painful condition. It will take time and some perseverance.

Don’t skip this article, you may think because you don’t take recreational drugs or don’t smoke cigarettes or drink too much alcohol that addiction doesn’t apply to you. However, I am talking about the everyday substances you find on the supermarket shelves!

Do addictions and cravings keep sabotaging your good intentions? Sabotage your good intentions for getting healthy and helping for arthritis.

Changing your habits of a life time, habits that speed up your aging and degeneration process is extremely difficult for people. Being addicted or having powerful cravings is a real problem for many people, adding to inflammation and pain. You might be one of a vast number of people who are hooked. It’s a viscous circle. You know the situation, you are not really hungry, but eat anyway.

Here are some of the typical foods and drinks you might be addicted to?

Chocolate – some people think the chocolate they eat is good for them, that it is healthy. There is some chocolate on the market that could be classed as healthy, but most people eat the standard chocolate that certainly isn’t going to contribute to their health quite the opposite in fact. The average chocolate on the supermarket shelves is 70% sugar and fat.

White flour – covers a vast amount of different foods, from bread, cookies, crackers, pastry and so on. This substance is destructive and highly addictive for some people.

Sugar – is found in so many foods these days. A couple of hundred years ago sugar was worth its weight in silver and was kept under lock and key, because it was then recognised for how addictive it was. For many decades sugar has been subsidised making it very cheap, hence why it is found in such abundance. This is another highly addictive and totally destructive substance that will encourage aging and degeneration.

High Fructose Corn Syrup – HFCS is found in so many processed products today, especially sodas. For the food industry is has some advantages over sugar, it is cheaper than sugar and has a quality that gives baked products an extended shelf life. It has been reported that HFCS is more addictive than sugar.

Caffeine – found in tea, coffee, and more soft drinks (sodas) than you may realise, even in soft drinks where you wouldn’t expect to find caffeine, like in orange flavoured soft drinks. Caffeine keeps you wanting more.

Artificial Sweeteners – much research has made it clear that products with artificial sweeteners will encourage a craving for sweet and fatty foods. Besides, these sweeteners are artificial chemical sweeteners. Do not be fooled with the advertising hype about these substances.

Processed, highly refined fats – these are also found on our supermarket shelves in abundance. Found in so many products, it takes studying the labels to uncover them. They can cause deficiencies in essential fatty acids – encouraging cravings.

Alcohol, we already know that alcohol can be addictive. The latest figures from the health department show we are drinking too much and it’s on the increase.

Salt – some people crave salt and salty foods – changing the taste bud and displacing other minerals in the body. The more you have the more you want.

Over the years at the clinic we have seen many people with quite serious chronic conditions who would rather suffer than give up their favourite foods and drinks. However, after the initial panic has subsided – most people want to change, want a better quality of life.

The first step is to write down in a daily journal everything you eat and drink. Plus your symptoms especially related to your arthritis. Most people are surprised when they see it all written down in black and white. It’s the first time some people actually fully appreciate what they are doing, what they are eating and drinking in the course of a week.

Some people have really little idea what they eat and how much they eat, until they see it written down.

We all know some foods are so more-ish – some people open up a packet of chocolate cookies, and some they want another and another, before long two thirds of the packet has gone and they weren’t even hungry.

Most people wouldn’t consider gorging on foods like apples somehow they just don’t have the same appeal or fill the same need. Back to our chocolate cookies, for some people just knowing that a third of a packet is left is enough to drive them crazy, needing to finish the packet, hungry or not. Then the feelings of being bloated, sleepy and guilty set in.

Good intentions sabotaged again. Maybe your situation is not as extreme. Maybe you are one of many people who just need something fatty and starchy with sugar or salty at around 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Around this time consciously or subconsciously your concentration begins to fail, maybe you start getting a headache, irritable or maybe just plain tired. You may think this is just stress. You convince yourself you need something to give you energy to get you through the rest of the day. You might also be like this around 11 in the morning too.

By the very things you choose to consume you are messing around with your blood sugar levels. Once again you are on this trend-mill and it really does take a concerted effort to get off it.

These fluctuating blood sugar levels are certainly sabotaging your plans for less inflammation and pain associated with arthritis, and a healthy long life. The though the body has a built-in safety mechanism that protects us to a degree from ourselves, there is only so much it can do before it becomes compromised.

IBS stands for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, encompassing a range of “functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders.” Conventional tests will show the bowel looking basically fine. It’s not life threatening but it does have a major impact on general health. Symptoms vary and do change from time to time from discomfort or pain ranging from sharp to dull, sometimes bloating with constipation or soft stools. For some it’s more upper gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms like heartburn, feeling full, nausea or bloating. While others suffer more lower gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms of pain and bloating, urgency or incomplete bowel emptying. Maybe headaches, lower back pain, muscle pains, fatigue, some sleep problems, anemia, weight-loss or gain, fluid retention and even fever.
From a naturopathic point of view a large part is due to what you choose to consume and your lifestyle plus the relationship between nerve, muscle, brain and gut. In many case studies I have done over more than 20 years there are some common factors – inflammation plus sensitivity to certain things plus emotions and worry. One thing has proven invaluable is encouraging clients/sufferers to keep a journal. I cannot emphasize enough how useful this is for any chronic condition. You become like a detective where every clue is important. Patterns immerge and you begin to see what is triggering or making your symptoms worse or better. Reactions to things can take anything from as little as 20 minutes to as long as 48 hours. For instance someone I saw had a migraine on waking every Sunday morning putting it down to the fact that she wasn’t looking forward to going back to work. Her journal revealed a habit of visiting her favorite restaurant on a Friday night, which happened to be Chinese. Records revealed that sometimes she didn’t suffer, when she didn’t go for Chinese. It was the MSG (mono sodium glutamate) and who knows a stress component too but the body couldn’t cope with both. The conclusion might sound obvious now but because reactions aren’t always the next day putting two and two together isn’t always easy.
There are many ways to record your information whether it’s a beautiful journal, an old diary or on your computer it doesn’t matter. The important thing is to remember to record everything accurately and regularly throughout the day. Not just what you eat and drink but also symptoms, emotions, how you slept and so on. It’s worth the effort.
We have an all year round awareness and celebration tree in our reception and I change the theme regularly. This month is The Haven Arthritis Awareness. We will have a leaflet available that lists the inflammatory (causing pain) foods and anti-inflammatory (helping to reduce pain) foods. I am also asking for your help in getting a community arthritis site off the ground for sufferers and practitioners. Please join www.myarthritisuk.com It’s a self-help site for any painful condition – fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, arthritis, painful back, neck and joints, lupus and more.

World Action On Salt and Health (WASH) was established in 2005. It’s an international team whose sole mission is to improve everyone’s health by educating the public about their salt intake. A very important aspect of their work is encouraging multi-national food companies to reduce salt in their products as too many contain vast amounts. They also work with governments around the world campaigning for salt reduction strategies and legislation.
Generally there are four ways you can consume salt. In order of amount consumed a) if you eat processed foods from the supermarket (for the average person this accounts for 75% of their intake!) b) eating in restaurants or getting take-a-ways c) by adding salt to cooking and c) at the table.
Without question it is widely recognized that we do need some salt to maintain good health, but most people are just consuming far too much. High intakes have been linked to higher levels of blood pressure, strokes, stomach cancer, osteoporosis, obesity, kidney stones and kidney disease. According to the WHO (World Health Organization) adults should eat maximum 5g a day, and children less.
How to reduce your salt intake?
1) Be mindful of the hidden salt in foods that don’t necessarily taste salty however, contain considerable amounts of salt such as breakfast cereals and bread. Read labels very carefully – Foods high in salt have more than 1.5g salt /100g (or 0.6g sodium / 100g). Foods low in salt have less than 0.3g salt /100g (or 0.1g sodium /100g)
2) Reduce salt by increasing herbs, black pepper, onions, chili, garlic, ginger, lemon etc.
3) Reduce the amount of processed foods and sauces you consume.
4) Snacks can be full of salt ie. roasted nuts or chips.
5) Buy herbal salt – herbamare is a good one.
6) Don’t add salt to your cooking, wait until your food is on your plate then taste it first before deciding what to add.
7) Put out various foods you like that are salty into various small bowls. Blind-fold yourself and take some food, chew it well, really concentrating on it. You’ll be surprised!
8) Buy a good quality salt. That has not been refined and still contains vital minerals (not just sodium). These quality salts are not usually white they maybe pale pink or pale green or pale yellow/beige etc.
9) Adding ground celery seeds to your salt can help considerably to reduce your salt intake.
10) As you get older your taste buds go into decline especially if you are zinc deficient, encouraging the need to add more salt. Take B complex and Zinc capsules, many find their taste and smell improves.
11) Salt is addictive a fact the food industry has fully exploited – so be patient be kind to yourself and gradually reduce your salt intake.
12) Some restaurant have chefs that are very keen on salt. Ask to have your food cooked with minimum or no salt. You have the option to add salt and pepper at the table.
For March think – Less Salt

* urinary frequency

* burning sensation

* maybe high temperature

* white blood cells in urine specimens (urine test stick).

The following suggestions are for prevention only, they are not meant as a treatment once you have the infection – you will need to see your doctor.

* Make sure you drink water every day plus herbal tea that is good for the urinary health

* Cut down drastically on sugar and foods containing sugar or better still avoid sugar. Sugar is acid forming and suppresses the immune system.

* Take cranberry extract in capsules (not the juice which contains sugar or artificial sweeteners).

* Eat natural live yogurt daily.

In more recent studies, research is finding much evidence to suggest that the toxins contained in foods actually promote weight-gain!

Other research suggests that caffeine and alcohol destroy the vital nutrients needed for fat-burning.

Toxins within the body encourage free-radicals and they too use up vital nutrients that would otherwise be used for fat burning. For others consuming foods that contain toxins encourages fluid retention.

What is meant by toxins? The usual processed foods found on the supermarket shelves contain additives, preservatives, colorants, enhancers, artificial sweeteners etc etc.

There are five inflammatory substances the body produces in response to various factors – environmental pollution, metabolic by-products, nutritional deficiencies and poor food choices, structural stress, digestive problems, infections, and pharmaceutical drugs.
1) Histamine – the mast cells produce histamine, I am sure you have heard of anti-histamine medication. Histamine is involved in the immune process for example – asthma, eczema, and hay-fever suffers produce high levels of histamine.
To counteract histamine – fruits like black currents, kiwi, and cherries, vegetables like onions and garlic, supplements like vitamin C capsules (particularly, quercetin capsules, and L-methionine capsules that help the liver to detoxify more efficiently, binding to excess histamine rendering it inactive.
2) Kinins – are found circulating in the blood stream, they are produced in response to tissue damage. Tissue damage can be caused by – high acidity levels, stress, high protein diets, dehydration, certain foods and drinks
To counteract kinins -a diet high in fruit and vegetables (other foods in moderation) will bring down acidity and maintain a good balance between acid and alkaline.
3) Prostaglandins – are short lived hormone type substances. They affect the tissue in their immediate area. The type of prostaglandins produced 1, 2, or 3, are produced as a direct result of the foods we eat. Prostaglandins 1 and 3 are very important not only as anti-inflammatory substances but they also help reduce cholesterol, prevent blooding clots and maintain good blood pressure.
To maintain a good balance -don’t overdo the meat consumption as it can encourage the production of the pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. Bromelain capsules – blocks pro-inflammation and encourages anti-inflammation. Ginger capsules, vitamin C, B Complex and minerals like magnesium and zinc are needed by enzymes to quell pro-inflammation. Flax seed oil capsules or fish oil capsules, plus a diet that provides enough essential fatty acids – fish, raw nuts and seeds.
4) Leukotrienes – much less is known about these inflammatory substances. They are related to prostaglandins and are generated from arachidonic acid, which comes from a diet high in animal products.
To counteract leukotrienes – vegetables, spice turmeric, quercetin capsules, and L-Arginine capsules.
5) Complement – you may or may not have heard of this. It is a protein found in the blood stream. There are about a dozen different substances involved in the immune system, and in the release of histamine from the mast cells – encouraging inflammation.
To counteract complement – there are various nutrients and antioxidants – Vitamin A or beta-carotene, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Selenium, and Zinc. Fruits and vegetables colored red, yellow, and orange like pumpkin, beetroot, squash, carrots, all berries, nectarines are also a rich source of beta-carotene.

Even if you don’t believe that certain foods can cause arthritis (even indirectly) or that certain foods can help to treat your arthritis – it would be difficult to argue a healthier diet would not improve you general quality of life. As I work with people all the time who are suffer with chronic conditions like arthritis I see all the improvements people gain from changing their diets.

Some people think I am crazy when I say you might suffer withdrawal symptoms to certain foods, because you could be addicted to some foods. Most people think of addictions – like drugs, tobacco, or alcohol. It is not easy to give up something you are addicted to, not just because you are attached to the stuff but also because of withdrawal symptoms you will have to cope with. If you have delayed allergies to a particular foods, it will be difficult to resist them without feeling some degree of discomfort. It is shorted lived. For instance the symptoms of withdrawal to caffeine and and sugar will be approximately 48 hours. These symptoms can vary from quite severe like a migraine to something mild like a fuzzy head.

Common temporary symptoms – headaches, irritability, more stiffness and joint pain (shorted lived then there is a marked improvement), fatigue, anxiety, digestive upsets of one description or another, nausea, low blood sugar levels and strong food cravings. Most people are absolutely fine by day 3, some by day 4, rarely do symptoms go 7 days.

Vitamin C supplement helps you to cope with the worst of the symptoms. Vitamin C helps by stimulating the production of the anti-inflammatory prostaglandins (1 and 3). Vitamin C is detoxing helping the body rid itself of certain irritants, helping cleanse the bowels and balance the bowel flora. Vitamin C is a natural anti-histamine which also help to pacify withdrawal symptoms.

Take 1000mg vitamin C capsules – one x three times a day.

Step up your consumption of vitamin C rich foods too.
